The urinary system has vital functions for the body: which include the removal of wastes, maintaining balance within the blood, filtering the blood, and releasing hormones. Unfortunately when the urinary system is out of balance, problems such as kidney stones and eventually chronic kidney disease occur. Kidney stones are on the rise over the last few decades, where 10-12% of the population in industrialized countries experiences this debilitating issue. When it comes to chronic kidney disease, more than 87,000 people die each year. These are some of the many issues we will learn about in this class.

In class we will go over the anatomy and physiology of the urinary system, as well as the pathologies that occur when there is an imbalance of the urinary tract. Disorders of the urinary system we’ll cover include: UTIs, cystitis, incontinence, over-active bladder, kidney stones, chronic kidney disease, end stage renal disease, and more.

A large portion of the population is dehydrated without really knowing it, thus the emphasis of water therapy is included in this program. Along with water therapy, Thomas will explain the process by which diseases are caused, what herbal therapies are used to assist and heal the body to health, preventative measures, and dietary changes that need to be made to support healing.

Types of medicinal plants discussed in this class include antiseptics, mucilants, anodynes, diuretics, kidney tonics, antispasmodics, stone dissolving, plus more. The materia medica covered will include preparation and dosage.
